I-5 Corridor Electric Distribution Upgrades
Overview
The I-5 Corridor Electric Distribution Capacity Upgrades project, spearheaded by Cowlitz PUD, aims to modernize and enhance the electric distribution infrastructure in rural communities along the I-5 corridor. This initiative addresses critical issues related to outdated and undersized electric distribution systems, which currently limit the opportunities for economic development, hinder the adoption of zero-emission transportation options and contribute to frequent power outages.
Project Goals
The primary goal of this project is to upgrade nearly four miles of electric distribution lines to improve grid reliability and resilience. By replacing outdated infrastructure with modern, higher-capacity lines, the project seeks to reduce power outages and enhance the overall reliability of the electric grid. Additionally, the project aims to support the development of electric vehicle (EV) public charging infrastructure along the I-5 corridor, promoting the adoption of zero-emission transportation options.
Supporting Documents
While the project location itself is not in a Historically Disadvantaged Community, the surrounding rural communities are afflicted by a lack of economic opportunity. The Washington State Consolidated Plan’s fourth major goal is to “Improve Rural Economic Development Opportunities” that will “Create and retain jobs accessible to low-income persons.” The CDBG program is available to award infrastructure grants in rural areas to support economic development activities, which is a fundamental priority for the program.
